Position Overview
We seek a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our organization as the Director of Safety and Compliance. Reporting to the Senior Director of Safety and Claims, you will oversee all safety aspects and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines. With a team of Safety Managers and Compliance Specialists reporting to you, you will play a critical role in maintaining our transportation operations' safety and promoting a culture of safety throughout the organization.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the team to design, develop, and implement comprehensive safety and compliance programs, policies, procedures, and training initiatives to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines.
- Keep abreast of all relevant transportation regulations and proactively monitor emerging risks/trends, safety regulations, and changes to industry standards. Participate in industry conferences, workshops, and forums to stay informed about emerging sustainable development trends. Effectively interpret and communicate this information within the organization.
- Continuously review, update, and refine safety policies and procedures to reflect industry best practices and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Oversee and manage the team responsible for conducting regular audits and inspections of transportation operations, facilities, and equipment. Identifying potential safety hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement, you will assist the team with developing corrective action plans and monitor the team's progress on timely implementation.
- Develop comprehensive safety training programs for employees. Provide ongoing support and guidance to the team and employees, ensuring training content and delivery are professional and aligned with safety standards.
- Manages the accident reporting and investigation process, determining underlying causes, identifying trends, and developing strategies to prevent future occurrences. Ensure accurate records and documentation of all incidents through auditing and reviewing with the team.
- Review key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor safety and compliance performance. Regularly analyze data and prepare reports on safety-related trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with relevant regulatory agencies, participating in audits, inspections, and meetings to ensure compliance while effectively representing the organization's interests.
- Effectively manage the team to ensure compliance with regulations set forth by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other relevant regulatory agencies. This includes monitoring and implementing policies, procedures, and best practices to maintain compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in the transportation industry.
- Set clear performance expectations, delegate tasks, and offer guidance and support to ensure the safety team operates efficiently.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, identifying areas for improvement and providing feedback to enhance individual and team performance.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs to equip team members with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
- Foster a motivating work environment that encourages teamwork, professional growth, and ongoing development.
- Manage the driver recognition and safety award program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in Safety Management or Compliance are a plus.
- Minimum of 7 - 10 years of progressive experience in transportation safety and compliance, preferably in a leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of applicable transportation regulations, such as but not limited to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines, Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) regulations, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing innovative safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Proven track record of conducting safety audits, investigations, and managing compliance inspections.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and develop practical solutions.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage employees at all levels of the organization.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and regulatory agencies.
Pay
- Salary Range $100k- $120k (Based on experience)
- Incentive $10-20k
